Challenges in Refurbishing the Suspension Struts

Our client needed to replace the rear suspension cylinders on their customer’s Caterpillar 777 Off-Highway Truck (OHT) due to heavy wear and tear.

These critical components support the truck’s immense weight and load, absorb shocks and vibrations, ensure proper suspension height, improve operator safety and protect the main chassis rails from damage.

Seeking a Superior Solution

They sought a solution that would restore the suspension cylinder rod and provide enhanced protection against future damage due to the harsh operating environment.

HVAF Chrome Carbide Coating

As experts in surface engineering, we recommended the application of a state-of-the-art HVAF (High Velocity Air Fuel) chrome carbide coating.

This advanced coating technology serves as a superior alternative to traditional hard chrome plating, offering unmatched durability and resistance to abrasion, corrosion and extreme temperatures.

A Tailored Approach: To restore the structural integrity of the suspension struts, we provided a tailored approach:

Precision Preparation: Pre-machining ensures a clean, uniform surface for optimal coating adhesion by removing the existing worn hard chrome coating using a cylindrical grinder.

Advanced Protection: The HVAF chrome carbide coating provides superior durability and protection.

Meticulous Refinement: Final machining on a cylindrical grinder and diamond belt linishing ensures a smooth, precise finish that meets the exact specifications for optimal performance.

Results: Reducing Downtime Efficiently

The results are impressive. The HVAF chrome carbide coating provides superior protection compared to the original hard chrome coating. Introducing this new layer of defence will extend the service life of the suspension cylinder, and inevitably, reduce overall operating costs.

Additionally, the resurfacing service was completed efficiently, allowing the company to minimise downtime and keep their truck fleet operational.

This rapid turnaround is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our experienced team.

The refurbished components are now equipped to withstand the rigors of their demanding working environment, ensuring reliable performance for years to come.
