Where It All Began
The origins of our company dates to 1953, when John Bonett, one of our founders, learnt how to metal spray at the Garden Island Dockyard. This technique was introduced by the English naval dockyard to repair components, becoming the foundations of the business.
In 1964, John, Bob, Lauire and Errol established a metal reclamation business together – now known as A1 Metallising Services. The company moved into a rented factory situated in Arncliffe, marking the beginnings of expansion and a new vision being brought to life.

Growth Through the Decades
Over the years, we have paved the way for continuous growth, led the way in technological advancements and built a solid reputation for our advanced work.
These pivotal years have cemented us as frontrunners in the surface engineering industry:
- 1972: We purchased our first factory in Arncliffe, NSW, a pivotal moment driven by increased demand and the need for expansion.
- 1976: Further growth led us to acquire the adjoining factory, allowing us to optimise our workshop and align with the latest innovations.
- 1988: After 24 years of building the business from the ground up, our three visionary founders retired, and the next generation stepped up into leadership roles.
- 1993: We pioneered surface engineering in Australia by investing in High Velocity Coatings, a technology that enables us to offer superior and sustainable coatings.
- 2022: We installed Australia’s first and only Precision Power Laser. This state-of-the-art equipment is more sustainable and allows for precise and accurate surface treatments, enhancing our capabilities and service.

On Saturday, August 10th (2024), we celebrated our 60th Anniversary, honouring the company’s history and our dedicated team today – the driving force behind our success in surface engineering.
We recognised outstanding contributions and long service, reflecting on our journey from early HVAF adoption to installing Australia’s first Precision Power laser.
This milestone event reinforced our dedication, collaboration and reputation for innovation and excellence.

We anticipate further advancements in precision laser coating techniques and plan to be early adopters of emerging technologies. These technologies are to better our clients, improving quality while reducing turnaround times.
